What Is It?Jabber is an instant messaging system that allows FNAL users to communicate with one another. Jabber also supports creation and joining of chat rooms for group communication. Additionally, many Jabber clients include support for other instant messaging systems such as Windows Live Messenger(MSN)and AOL Instant Messaging AIM.
Why Use FNAL IM?The site instant messaging server uses a 'Jabber' server for instant messaging. The benefits of using the FNAL system are: Find People Quickly: Its easy to find colleagues at Fermilab since everyone uses the same username for both email and instant messaging. Chat Rooms: Chat rooms available for virtual group meetings. Web links: Share links to your favorite Web sites Presence Management: Check at a glance if people you work with regularly at available. Remote Notification: Using the Jabber protocol it is possible to have systems send notification messages over Fermilab Instant Messaging instead of e-mail, which is not guaranteed to be delivered in real time. Security: Uses SSL encryption to protect anyone logged into the site IM server when communicating with anyone else logged into the server.
Supported ClientsThe FNAL supported clients are: Pidgin for Windows and Linux users; Adium for Mac users.
