Scientific Interest

I am in the Cosmic Physics Center (CPC) and I have a joint appointment in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. I came to Fermilab in 1991 to help establish Fermilab’s effort on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a project in which Fermilab played a major role until 2008. Since then, I contributed to planning for the Giant Magellan Telescope, and more recently have been working on the Dark Energy Survey, becoming Director in October 2018.

My interests include using large sky surveys to constrain how the populations of galaxies and quasars were built up, and how they have evolved with cosmic time.

At the University of Chicago, I teach an undergraduate course on the history of making maps of the distribution of stars and galaxies.
