Computing Division New Web Site FAQ
Please send your questions to helpdesk.fnal.gov and we will post answers on this page.
Q: Where do I direct my questions about the new CD web site?
A: Please open a helpdesk ticket via Helpdesk Request Form. The staff there
will direct the questions to the communications and outreach group cd web team.
Q: Will my existing bookmarks that reference computing division pages work?
A: For the most part the answer to this is no. The content on the site
has been completely reorganized and this made it unfeasible for us to
provide redirects to all the old site's links. (section below on new organization of content)
Q: Is there a link to the Fermilab main home page and the Fermilab at
Work page?
A: Yes. The link to the main Fermilab page obtained by clicking on the
Fermilab name and logo in the bottom right had corner. The link to the Fermilab at Work page is also in the bottom gray
bar and named "Fermilab at work".
Q: What happened to cdinternal.fnal.gov?
A: This site is no longer being used and was renamed. All the content
from this site which was linked onto the old site has been migrated onto the new site.
Q: I have a web page that is using the CD includes from the old site. Is
there an updated version available?
A: Yes there is. If your area was using links to get the includes, you do not have to change anything. If you are using the includes on
a separate web server then you can download the zip file from http://computing.fnal.gov/cdincludes and unzip it
in your cdincludes/html dir.
Q: What seach mechanisms are available on the new site?
A: Yes there are couple of ways to find things. First in the main menu bar of each page we have provided an interface to a Google Search engine. (Note: that for a while after the new site becomes public, the seach engine will still have information from the old sites in its cache. As time passes this information will expire.) There is also a Site Map available from the Quick Links section on the home page.
Q: How is the content on this new site laid out?
A: The information provided on the old computing division web site has been divided into 4 content sections: About, Services, Science & Computing and Internal. A short tutorial about these follows.
• About: Information important to non-Fermi employees and users
o Metrics
o Division scientist list
o Outreach Activities
o Mou's
• Services: This section tells you
o how to get help
o how to get started as a computing user at Fermi
o what services we provide and links to information in using those services
• Science & Computing: This section talks about the Computing support we provide for the
science of the Laboratory. In it you’ll find links to:
o Acclerator Projects
o DAQ and Controls
o Experiment Support
o Physics Tools
o Scientific Facilities
• Internal: This section has information that used to be located on cdinternal.fnal.gov. Note
that the cdinternal web server has been renamed to avoid confusion with this new section.
You would navigate to this area for things like:
o Leave usage
o Effort reporting
o division calendars and phone numbers
o Budget and Finance
o ES&H
o Travel information
Q. Where are the computing accounts forms on the new site? (04/03/07)
A. These have moved to the Services->Getting Services section. Specifically: http://computing.fnal.gov/xms/Services/Getting_Services/Accounts_and_Passwords
OR
http://computing.fnal.gov/xms/Services/Getting_Services/Forms
