CD Recommends Windows Users WAIT to Install Internet Explorer 8

Microsoft has announced the release of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) for Windows XP and Vista. At some still-not-specified date, Microsoft will deliver IE8 as an update via the Windows Update service for machines running the older IE6 and IE7 browsers.

The Computing Division has been evaluating IE8 beta versions for the past several months and we have found issues with the browser and accessing several of the FNAL sites. In addition, a few key Fermilab web applications have not been certified to run on the new browser.

CD Recommendation

CD strongly recommends that Windows users WAIT to install IE8 until it becomes available as an approved update via the Fermilab  Windows Automatic Update Service (WAUS). CD will be blocking the installation of IE8 on supported systems until we are ready to make the transition.

CD also recommends that staff in Divisions, Sections and Experiments who maintain web applications test their web sites, extensions, and applications to make sure they are compatible with IE8.

If a problem develops after IE8 is installed, you have an option to uninstall IE8 and roll back to IE7. Please contact the CD Service Desk for assistance. (should we also include the link on Microsoft site for removing IE8?)
