Options for Web Publishing at Fermilab

There are a number of options for Web publishing at Fermilab. The one(s) you choose will depend on how much information you have (what type of computer resources you will need), whether that information is personal or pertains to a group of people, and what type of support you need (including backups of your web pages).

  • Space on your existing division/department/experiment/project web server
    • Contact your supervisor, spokesperson, project leader to request this.

  • Directory on an existing central web server
    • URLs of the form:
      • http://conferences.fnal.gov/yourdirname/   for conferences
      • http://projects.fnal.gov/yourdirname/         for approved Fermilab projects
      • http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/yourdirname/      for approved Fermilab organizations
    • Fill out This Form to request a server.
    • Divisions, experiments and other discrete groups should probably have their own server.
    • If you need a CGI on the main Fermilab web server www.fnal.gov (discouraged), e-mail the README information described in this fnal.gov CGI Policy to request your CGI. CGIs are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
    • The area is set up for you, but you need to assign a qualified web area manager to make configuration changes as needed and answer questions from your web authors. Information to help with this is on Information for Fermilab Webmasters. A qualified web area manager knows how to:
      1. Use basic Unix commands.
      2. Use and modify AFS permissions and groups.
      3. Edit web files on Unix or edit on a PC/MAC and transfer files to UNIX.
      4. Restrict access to web files using commands in an apache .htaccess file.
      5. Redirect URLS using commands in an apache .htaccess file.
      6. Write secure CGI scripts if a CGI area has been requested.
      7. Use the Computing Division helpdesk to submit problem reports.

  • Web server set up for you on expwww shared central web cluster
    • Your own server name:  http://something.fnal.gov/
    • Submit a Web Server Request Form to request this.
    • For experiments and projects. Limited resources are available.
    • The area is set up for you, but you need to assign a qualified webmaster to make configuration changes as needed and answer questions from your web authors. Information to help with this is on Information for Fermilab Webmasters. A qualified webmaster knows how to:
      1. Use basic UNIX commands.
      2. Access, use, and modify AFS permissions and groups.
      7. Use the Computing Division Service Desk to submit problem reports.

  • Your personal professional web page on fnalu
    • URL is of the form: http://home.fnal.gov/~yourusername/
    • Use these instructions to set it up: Professional Home Pages At Fermilab.
    • Curriculum vitae, contact information, professional biography
    • Not to be used as a repository for project-related work - Anything which will be needed by your colleagues after you leave, should be in a group-access area.
    • You must have an account on fnalu to use this.
    • CGIs are not enabled on the home pages web server.
    • Remember that this is world-readable unless you protect it. See: Professional Home Pages At Fermilab and Restricting Access to Web Pages.
    • Should not contain personal information about your children which would make them vulnerable to predators.
