AFS

AFS service is provided by servers running OpenAFS software. AFS, or Andrew File System, can be accessed both onsite and offsite without the need of a VPN client. AFS is a very secure filesystem. It uses Kerberos authentication, supports ACLs, and is capable of using encryption to transfer data from server(s) to client(s).

AFS is best suited for data which is read mostly, needs to be shared across a wide audience and is not highly reliant on performance. AFS requires that client software be installed on the client machine.

For more information, please refer to UNIX at Fermilab User Manual Chapter 8: The AFS File System

Central UNIX System at Fermilab - FNALU

In order to get an account on the central UNIX system FNALU, you will need approval from your supervisor or a scientific spokesman when you fill out the Request Form for FNALU Accounts.

FNALU is a managed resource. If you need dedicated space for your project for a group of people on AFS, please fill out Request Form for AFS Space , small projects may qualify under "Non-Grant Usage " guidelines. If you are part of a group or experiment that already has an approved grant, you may be covered by that grant, so check with your group/experiment first.

UPS and UPD Online Documentation

UPS (UNIX Product Support) is a software support toolkit developed at Fermilab for the management of software products on local systems by the system administrators and users. It was also designed to facilitate the product distribution and configuration management tasks of the product providers.

UPD (UNIX Product Distribution) is a companion product to UPS, and provides the functionality for uploading/downloading products between local systems and product distribution servers.
