Operating Systems at Fermilab

The Fermilab Computing Division supports Mac OS, Windows, UNIX and Linux.

Macintosh:

Mac OS at FNAL
CD recommends and fully supports Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard.

Windows:

Windows at FNAL
CD recommends and fully supports XP Professional SP2 and W2003 SP1 (non64-bit version). The full list of OS's approved by the Windows Policy Commitee to run in the Windows Domain is on the Policy Committee's site

Windows Vista Upgrade Information: CD strongly recommends that FNAL Windows users wait to upgrade to Windows Vista. (04/02/2008)

Linux/Unix:

Scientific Linux Fermi at FNAL
CD recommends and supports  Scientific Linux Fermi for use on site. This OS is RedHat Enterprise Linux recompliked from source with additional RPM's included to primarily support the Fermilab computer security infrastructure. A full list of the OS versions and their support status can be found on the Fermi Linux site.


Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs):

PDAs/Wireless Devices at FNAL
CD is developing support for PDAs and similar mobile devices (cellphone/PDA combinations). Limited support is available for some applications running on the PalmOS operating system.
