Adium

 

What Is It?

Adium is a popular instant messaging client for Mac OSX that supports multiple protocols through the libpurple library. It is written using Mac OSX's Cocoa API, and it is released under the free software GNU General Public license. Adium now supports AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and Jabber/XMPP (including Google Talk). At Fermiliab we use Jabber/XMPP.

The current STABLE Version for Mac OSX is 1.3.3

 

System Requirements

Below are the requirements needed in order to run Adium at Fermilab.

  • Computer/Processor: G4/G5 PPC or Intel Core Duo
  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 or newer, an Apple-branded Macintosh computer
  • Additional requirements:
    • Messenging accounts (Jabber, AIM, MSN, YIM, GoogleTalk, etc.)
    • Administrative privileges are needed to install Adium

How To Obtain

This software is made available free of charge to FNAL users and visitors.

 

Installing

The software can be downloaded from Adium's Website for installing : Click Here.
 
 

Using

 Launch Adium by double clicking the Adium icon in your Applications folder.
  1. Click FileAdd AccountJabber. The Accounts dialog appears
  2. In the Jabber ID box, type username@jabber.fnal.gov, where username is the first part of your FNAL email address. For example, if your email address is cartman@fnal.gov, then your Jabber ID is cartman@jabber.fnal.gov.
  3. To connect to the Fermilab chat server when you start Adium, select Connect when Adium opens.
  4. Click the Personal tab.
  5. In the Alias box, type your full name.
  6. If you wish to use a different icon than the one shown, select Use this icon and click Choose Icon... to browse for the image that you wish to use. You can use any picture or icon you have on you laptop or desktop.
  7. Click the Options tab.
  8. In the Connect Server box, type jabber.fnal.gov. The default port to use is 5222.
  9. Click the Privacy tab.
  10. Select Encrypt Chats Automatically from the Encryption list.
  11. Fermilab does not use a proxy, so the Proxy tab does not need to be completed unless you are at a different location.
  12. Click OK to create this account.
