Prof. Basappa and his students are working this summer in CD Facilities Department with Tim Kasza, Adam Walters and David Ritchie under DOE Funded FaST (Faculty and Student Teams) program to improve temperature monitoring in the FCC Computer Rooms.

- Microsoft Technology Days: 3/31/2009-4/01/2009 Fermilab co-hosted the event with Argonne in WH1W.
- FNALU Alias Change: The alias for FNALU switched from fsui03 to flxi02 on 03/16/2009 in preparation for 04/13/2009 decommissioning of fsui03. If there is some dependency on fsui03 which cannot be met by another resource, email dss-est@fnal.gov. The hardware for fsui03 is over ten years old and this node will not be replaced by another Solaris machine. Also, machines that handle NIS service on FNALU will change in April. A solaris machine for web testing was made available before fsui03 is decommissioned.

- Douglas Thain from University of Notre Dame presented Computing Techniques Seminar "Programming Multicore Clouds Using High Level Abstractions" on 02/19/2009. View presentation here.
- A new paper by Madrid & Macchetto ranks SDSS as an astronomical observatory with the highest scientific impact in astronomy based on paper citations. SDSS also ranked first in their previous 2006 ranking.
- Kate Keaheay from University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory presented Computing Techniques Seminar "Cloud Computing with Nimbus" on 01/29/2009. View the presentation slides here.
- SDSS Galaxy Map: Follow the link to view a 3-dimensional map of the distribution of galaxies. The map is one of the many results from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for which the Computing Division provides essential support.
- Members of the Computing Division ESE department participated in 2008 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium in Dresden, Germany: Marcos Turqueti presented a paper on the hardware of the CAPTAN system; Ryan Rivera presented a poster on the software for the CAPTAN system; and Vince Pavlicek was one of the organizers for the mTCA workshop.

- Computing Division Deputy Head Patricia McBride presented a talk "Computing Models for the LHC Experiments" for the Hadron Collider Physics Summer School 2008 on August 12, 2008. The Summer School is hosted at Fermilab from August 12-22, 2008.

- New Science on the Open Science Grid (OSG), (Ruth Pordes et al. FERMILAB-PUB-08-195-CD, Jun 2008, 6pp., describes how the OSG enables new science and the work of new scientists to be accomplished. The new modalities fostered by OSG are also described. These, for example, make it possible for university physics departments, far from the Switzerland-located Large Hadron Collider, centeral computing farms, and tape stores to sustain active local research groups while at the same time contributing to common scientific discovery worldwide).

- The SDSS data archive server. Eric H. Neilsen, Jr. (Fermilab). The SDSS data archive server provides public access to the results of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) through the use of advanced computing technology. This article, published in October 2007 but still relevant today, describes the challenges of doing this for the volume and complexity of an astronomical survey, such as SDSS, which contains roughly one quarter of the night sky.
