You can software and its associated documentation by using the Product and Documentation database. From this web page you can search the database by product name, function, or keyword; search the Computing Division web pages; or select information by category.
The Computing Division delivers software in two different ways. The KITS software repository is available to all computers in the fnal.gov domain and registered users. The Computing Division has a separate software repository to provide software developed at Fermilab to outside users. This is the Fermilab Software Tools Program (or FermiTools) .
KITS
Access to the KITS area is restricted to machines in the fnal.gov domain and registered users. Off-site registration is limited to Fermilab collaborators and others working directly with Fermilab. Off-site individuals who desire access to this area must fill out the registration form. It is available on the web or obtain the file named registration at ftp.fnal.gov.
There are two methods that can be used to obtain UNIX products from KITS:
The first method is using upd (UNIX Product Distribution) using the machine upd.fnal.gov as the distribution source. This product provides a menu that allows you to list, copy, unwind, and install on your local system after you have installed the upd product.
The UPS and UPD v4 Reference Manual is available on line and on paper. The easiest way to install upd is to install the bootstrap_coreFUE product, which includes ups, upd and perl.
The second method is anonymous ftp to the machine ftp.fnal.gov. The Computing Division supports a modified FTP server that requires registration to gain access to these files for those using computers not in the fnal.gov domain. To access the files using ftp, either ftp to ftp.fnal.gov or go through the web at ftp://ftp.fnal.gov
FermiTools
Fermilab Software Tools Program (or FermiTools) provides an umbrella for providing software that is already widely used and well accepted at the lab to outside users. Our goal is to foster mutually beneficial collaboration in the use and further development of this software. This software is available via anonymous ftp.
