Fermilab Computing Division

Welcome to the FNPRT webpage !

We have recently made some changes in the way print jobs are processed at Fermilab.

The print server known as FNPRT has been in service since early 1992. FNPRT was a VAX 4000 m90 running OpenVMS 5.5-2 that currently had over 680 print queues defined on it. While FNPRT has been reliable and quite capable in its duties there are numerous factors pushing us to replacement including the non-support of OpenVMS at Fermilab.

The new server is a Enterprise 250 Work Group Server running Solaris. The printing software we are using is from Easy Software Products. ESP Print Pro is a complete UNIX cross-platform printing system.

ESP Print Pro enhances the printing system that comes with your operating system with the Common UNIX Printing SystemTM, or "CUPSTM"". CUPS is based on an international printing standard called the Internet Printing Protocol, or "IPP". IPP provides the framework for modern printing and is used by Microsoft®, Hewlett-Packard®, Xerox®, and many other server and printer manufacturers.

Jobs will be submitted in the same manner using Fermi utilities for printing on networked printers (flpr)
An additional functionality has been implemented such that jobs may be viewable via a web interface. Information provided below

This server is supported by the Core Servers & Infrastructure Group of the Core Support Services Department.

NOTE - If you have questions, please check out the FAQ prior to submitting a help desk ticket.
