UNIX > The FNAL.GOV Realm

At Fermilab, the name of the Kerberos strengthened realm for computers running (any flavor of) UNIX is FNAL.GOV. Note the upper case. You will need to obtain a Kerberos principal in order to access computers in this realm.

All UNIX machines at Fermilab are required to be configured such that they are members of the FNAL.GOV realm. Off-site machines used for Fermilab-related work may also be configured as such.

Once you have authenticated to the FNAL.GOV realm on your desktop, you can freely access over the network any computer in this realm on which you have an account, without retyping your (FNAL.GOV) Kerberos password! (You have to learn how to obtain "forwardable" tickets and how to forward them; that's in the Strong Authentication "Quick Guide for UNIX", and you can look it up later -- it's easy.)
