Mail Gateway Server
A gateway server acts as a central distribution point for electronic mail
to and from other systems on the network. It facilitates the transfer
of messages between dissimilar mail systems without affecting the contents
of the messages.
The laboratory mail gateway server is referred to as the FNAL mail gateway
as far as incoming mail is concerned and it is referred to as the
FNAL SMTP server or smtp.fnal.gov as far as outgoing mail is concerned.
There are mail gateway user options
that can be customized, such as changing your password and setting your mail
forwarding.
Authenticated SMTP has been enabled on the Mail Gateways. This will allow any
authenticated user to relay through the gateways as necessary. Please see
http://computing.fnal.gov/email/smtp-server/tls.html
for more details as well as client configuration information.
E-Mail Client SMTP Server Settings
On January 5th, 2002 the POP and IMAP servers (POPGTW, IMAPServer1,
IMAPServer2, IMAPServer3) managed by the Computing Division / Operating
Systems Support/ Core Servers and Infrastructure group will have a slight
change made to the SMTP server configuration. This change will prevent
any system except the site mailservers to connect to the SMTP port of
the POP or IMAP server. This is being done to allow the CD/OSS/CSI group
to better maintain the servers for use by all users.
How does this affect the POP and IMAP users? For 99% of you there will
be no effect as you are already using the recommended SMTP server in
your client - smtp.fnal.gov. For anyone that is using the POP or IMAP
server as your SMTP server - after January 5th, you will no longer be
able to send mail.
