Installing Winbiff

Introduction

WinBiff is a Windows mail notification and filtering program for use in conjunction with several different mail systems, including Pegasus Mail, Eudora for Windows, Microsoft Mail, Windows Messaging, cc:Mail, Lotus Notes, FirstMail, Novell GroupWise, Novell MHS, FSUUCP, PC-NFS, UUPC/extended, and Waffle. WinBiff also works as a POP3 and IMAP4 client using WinSock. WinBiff can display MIME-encoded headers for Internet mail.

WinBiff is a shareware program. The PCS Group has purchased a site license. A copy may be obtained from PCKITS/Desktop Tools/PC_Tools/Apps/WinBiff/WinBiff43a.exe, or right here (On site only!).

Installation

By default the .exe file will decompress into your C:\temp folder. Simply double click on the Setup.exe file and follow the prompts.

After the install is complete. Go to the WinBiff4.3a folder then into the key folder (C:\temp) and there is a registration key file for WinBiff. When the key file is correctly installed, the registration reminder dialog will not appear.

To install the key file, copy it into your WinBiff start directory (C:\Program\Winbiff). If you have installed WinBiff to use a different start directory, you must copy the key file to that directory.

Set Up

After installation is complete start up WinBiff (Start Menu/Programs/WinBiff).
You will see a mailbox icon in the right side of your task bar. Double click on it and a large mailbox (seen below) will appear on your desktop.

Click in the upper left hand corner to access the setup menu.

In the Message source tab, select IMAP4 and Unread Mail only.

Click on the Mailbox tab.

You may choose to poll for your new mail greater than every 600 seconds (default is 60 seconds), but it is imperative that you do not set this number for anything less! Constant polling puts an unnecssary load on the server. If you find it necessary that you check your mail more than every 10 minutes then you can manually do so.

Enter your IMAP email login name and our mail host: imapserver1.fnal.gov.
It is up to the user if they want to be prompted for their password or not.

Click on the Window tab.

You may customize your window as you see fit. In this example, I've chosen the window to appear with Cele's Mail in the banner, when your mail is polled the mail icon will appear on top of your open windows on your desktop. The icon will also blink when mail is being polled.

Leave the contents of the Mail reader tab blank.

Click on the Colors tab.

Use the scrollbar controls to set the colors for the area indicated. Select an area by clicking of its name or by clicking on the displayed samples
The "Defaults" button restores default colors for all the areas.

Click on the Sound tab.

Enter the name of a .WAV file if you are using the "Custom" sound option otherwise use the Beep option.

The Network tab should be left at the defaults.
