Policy on SPAM email at Fermilab
Fermilab believes in free and uncensored communication. Since it is impossible to tell with certainty if a piece of e-mail is Spam, the Fermilab
mail system will deliver all e-mail that it receives, regardless of content.
There are two exceptions to this rule:
- If the incoming message is determined to have a virus it will be
deleted at the gateway.
- If the measure is necessary to protect the mail service (Denial of
Service attacks, blocking by offsite SPAM tagging services, etc), messages
determined by the FNAL Spam tagging systems as Spam may be deleted until the
service returns to normal.
Requests to block email will be denied, unless it has been determined that this measure is necessary in order to protect the mail service (Denial of Service attacks, viruses, etc...).
The Fermilab mail system is using a Spam tagging system. The system adds headers to the message that can be used by email clients to filter mail based on the Spam tagging systems rating. More information on this system is available.
The new IMAP servers also have server side filtering available.
Any questions regarding this policy should be directed to
