Policy on IMAP Message Size Restrictions at Fermilab
On Monday, April 28th, a 50MB email message size limit was placed on the lab IMAP servers. Messages larger than 50MB sent to the IMAP servers will be returned to the sender with an error message.
This decision was made to prevent large messages from causing problems with
the imap servers. These problems range from users not being able to clean up
their email to the imap servers becoming unavailable to all users.
If you need to share a file larger than 50MB there are better alternative
methods than sending email. These include:
-Compress files before sending (ZIP,TAR)
-Send a link
-Use a shared file system -AFS / NT / Web / FTP
If you experience trouble with the suggested work arounds or require
assistance please contact the Computing Division Helpdesk.
Any questions regarding this policy should be directed to the Computing Division Helpdesk.
