Sarah's Minutes of the Mar 28, 2001 Jet/Met meeting ------------------------------------------- Attendence: Sarah Eno, Pam Chumney, Greg Graham, Pal Hidas, Irwin Gaines, Salavat Abdullin, Paris Sphicas, Sasha Nikitenko, Ritva Kinnunen, Mehmet Zeyrek, Ian Fisk, Andrei Krokhotine, Alexei Oulianov Agenda ------ Update on HCAL electronics simulation - Salavat Abdullin Update on jet energy scale and fake jets - Andrei Krokhotine Physicist interface to production - Greg Graham Next Production - Sarah Eno Update on HCAL electronics simulation - Salavat Abdullin Salavat presented an update on his work to properly simulate the HCAL readout within ORCA. He has made many changes, though these changes have not yet been incorporated into an official ORCA release. He changed the algorithm that is used to extract the energy from the time samples from the ECAL scheme (where the weights are optimized to reduce the effect of the simulated electronic noise) to a more simple one, which could actually be implemented in the hardware. The weights are now (-1.5,-1.5,1,1,1) in the trigger primitives, and (-2,-2,1,1,1,1) for the DAQ path. He has also changed the centering of the HCAL pulse so that there are two bins with approximately equal pulse height. The ECAL-like version centered it so that one bin had the biggest amplitude (so, the current beam crossing id algorithm for L1 will have to be altered, or turned off before this new code can be used, since it is based on the ECAL shape). Also, in the old code, the HF readout was assumed to be identifical to the HB/HE. However, they are actually quite different. Salavat has separated the HF and put in his best knowledge of the its readout. However, he needs a contact person in the HF group, to check that his information about the HF is correct. None of these changes are expected to have a big effect on trigger rates or resolutions. However, the change that he put in that may have a big effect. He is now using new noise levels, provided to him from John Elias, that significantly increase the amoun to of noise in the HE/HB. He now sees quite a few towers with noise > 1-6 GeV. We need to check to see how this will affect the level 1 tau identification, and the MET resolution. We asked Salavat to generate a small tau sample with the new and old code, and a small minimum bias sample, to check MET. Salavat wanted to wait until he got more final numbers from Elias. Sarah said she sent a mail to Kunori, asking him to urge Elias to pass the more final numbers on to Salavat. Salavat is also working with Vincenzo to find ways to speed up the code. Update on jet energy scale and fake jets - Andrei Krokhotine Andrei noticed that even when you apply jet energy corrections to the QCD jets in the HLT sample, you do not recover the generator-level jet spectra because of smearing. He thought of a way to undo the effects of this smearing, which is not generally applicable, but which one could tune for the physics sample you were interested in. Physicist interface to production - Greg Graham Greg is working on method to insure quality control on a production system that is spread out all over the world. He especially would like input from the physics groups on two issues: a standard way to setup and document the input cards to the generators, and on ways of validating the output. Greg presented a first design of a methodology for specifying the card files to the generator. He needs to provide us with some documentation, and then we will try to have the various physicists who are making production requests for the "next" production to try it out, and give their comments. Sarah urged early coordination with the russian and helsinki groups, as we don't want the physicists to have to specify things one way for european production centers, and another for US ones. Next Production - Sarah Eno Sarah showed some preliminary requests for our next production. She encouraged people to attend the CPT week April 23-27 We have heard that many software types are not planning on going to the CMS week in Sicily. So, we are also proposing a jet/met/hcal meeting at CERN just before, june 13-15. People are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting.
