Mission Statement
The GDH group develops distributed software systems to enable Petaybyte-scale disk-based data storage and
movement for FNAL experiments, US-CMS and the LCG in general, FermiGrid, and the OSG. To achieve these
goals, the group participates primarily in two projects: DCache and SRM. Also, the group works with other
storage-related projects and collaborations to trade insights and look for areas of overlap to exploit for
mutual benefit.
DCache
The FNAL DCache project is the co-collaborator in the DCache project, along with the founding laboratory,
DESY. DCache is distributed disk-based storage system that began its career as a rate-adapting front-end
cache to tape-based Mass Storage System (MSS). DCache has since evolved to be a more general storage
high-delivery-rate, large-scale storage system, with stand-alone plus datafile replication applications as
well as its original role as a front-end to a tape-based storage.
The GDH group also consults on the operations of the DCache systems used by general FNAL users (FNDCA),
FNAL Run II (CDFDCA), US-CMS-T1 (CMSDCA), US-CMS-T2 (6 installations across the USA), and FermiGrid (up and
coming application of the FNDCA system). GDM also co-supports the DCache software with DESY for the LCG and
OSG, and across the world.

SRM
The FNAL Storage Resource Manager (SRM) project participates in the development of the SRM middleware
component specification as a standard Grid Storage Element interface, as well as the development of an SRM
implementation using DCache as the underlying storage component and gridftp as the primary data transport
mechanism. Another key part of this project is to validate inter-operability of the FNAL SRM
implementation, both server and client portions, with the few other implementations being developed around
the world.

Support
The GDH group consults on the operations of the SRM/DCache systems used by general FNAL users (FNDCA), FNAL
Run II (CDFDCA), US-CMS-T1 (CMSDCA), US-CMS-T2 (7 installations across the USA), and FermiGrid (up and
coming application of the FNDCA system). GDM also co-supports the DCache software (with DESY) and the
SRM-dCache software for the LCG and OSG, and across the world.
